Can you say "A" for Aardvark? Of course, apple would be easier to say but these are animals for the ABCs. The name aardvark comes from a word meaning "earth pig." Aardvarks are found in all regions, from dry savanna to rain forest, where there are sufficient termites for food, access to water and sandy or clay soil. If the soil is too hard, aardvarks, despite being speedy, powerful diggers, will move to areas where the digging is easier. They are nocturnal, usually waiting until dark before they emerge from their burrows. They may on occasion sun themselves after a cold night. They are seldom seen, but their presence in an area serves many other animals. The abandoned aardvark's holes serves as shelter for bats, hares, ground squirrels, cats, civets, porcupines, hyenas, jackals, monitor lizards, warthogs, owls and other birds. Their burrows may be simple chamber with one entrance or complicated maze of 20 or more entrances. They keep their burrows very clean. These animals are nocturnal with very poor eyesight. Aardvarks are very cautious leaving their burrows. They will stand for several minutes motionless. Then they suddenly leaps with powerful jumps. They will raise up on their legs, perk their ears and turn their head in all directions. If they hear no sounds, they will make more powerful jumps as they slowly look for food. Strange huh. Interesting Fact: The aardvark has fewer teeth than most mammals. The shape of their teeth are like a column which have no roots and do not grow simultaneously.
If you ever have termites, call you friendly neighbor hood Aardvark.
