Can you say "N" for Nightingale. The Nightingale is usually regarded as an English bird, and it is abundant in many parts of the midland, eastern, and western counties of England, and the woods, coppices, and gardens ring with its wonderful song. Its beautiful song is remarkable, being powerful, melodious, sweet, rich and varied. It is also found, however, in large numbers in Spain and Portugal and occurs in Austria, upper Hungary, Persia, Arabia, and Africa, where it is supposed to spend its winters. Their diet consists of insects, which it finds mostly on the ground. In the autumn they will eat berries. The nest is usually sited on the ground among leaf litter and twigs in undergrowth among dense shrubbery in woods, coppices, orchards and gardens. The nest is constructed by the female from dead leaves and grass, and lined with fine grasses and hair. Tales told: There are many traditional stories concerning the bird, but all revolve around a theme which is that the bird sings with its breast pressed upon a sharp thorn, in order to stay awake. The reason for this is that it is alleged that the nightingale originally only had one eye and that it stole the legendary single eye of the slow worm, since which time the vengeful slow worm has been searching for the bird in order to get back its eye. Therefore the bird sings all night to keep itself awake.
