Can you say "Z" for Zebra. The Zebra is a part of the horse family,
Equidae, native to central and southern Africa. They are most well known for
their distinctive black and white stripes. There is a theory about the stripes,
supported by experiment, that the disruptive coloration is an effective means of
confusing the visual system of the blood-sucking tsetse fly. They are typically
herd animals. They typically stand one to two meters tall, two to three meters
long, and weigh 250-500 kilograms as adults (depending on the species). They can
travel at a top speed of fifty-five kilometers per hour, slower than a horse.
However, it has much greater stamina. There are four extant species, as well as
several subspecies. Zebra populations vary a great deal, and the relationships
between and the classification status of several of the subspecies are well
known. Interesting Fact: In England, Lord Rothschild frequently used zebras for
drawing carriages.
